Lake Water Bleaching

I came across this beautiful photo taken in Kenya’s Turkana region on one of the blogs I follow.

The caption mentioned that the boys’ hair was bleached by water from the lake. I was like wait lake water can bleach hair? So I dug and found out some more interesting information on “bleaching” lakes.  Lake Turkana found in the northern part of Kenya is what is known as a soda lake or alkaline lake they have high concentrations of carbonate salts that make them strongly  alkaline and their pH value is very high way above 7 usually 9-12. Kenya’s Lake Turkana has a pH value above 9.2. Soda lakes not only bleach your hair but contain high fluoride contents that stain your teeth if you drink the water or use it to brush your teeth! You learn something new every day never some knew lakes could bleach hair! I may just head up to Lake Turkana bottle some of this water and sell it off as hair bleach lol!
