Mineral Oil and Petroleum Jelly

Do any of you ladies stay clear of products containing mineral oil or petroleum jelly? If so why? I for one use products that contain both in my hair, my Amla oil has mineral oil in it doesn’t bother me one bit I have a styling product that is compounded with petroleum jelly works well for me and I see no reason not to use it. I use Vaseline which is basically petroleum jelly on my lips when they are dry. I have talked about having super dry legs in another post I apply Vaseline on my feet first and then use a lotion on top of that works well for me, even baby oil is mostly mineral oil. I am just wondering how a product that has worked well for eons is now considered “bad”. In my quest to find out more about mineral oil and petroleum jelly I stumbled on these two articles by hair and beauty bloggers who also happen to be scientists. I am glad I did because unless my Doctor says so I am not about to stop using products with petroleum jelly or mineral oil in them.

What are your thoughts on mineral oil or petroleum jelly based products?

  1. I started getting a little nervous about mineral oils after hearing all the talk about how they are bad for your hair, but I really haven't had a problem with it thus far. My aunt used to use Vaseline in her hair and her hair is very long and healthy. Until I start noticing any negative results, I think I'll keep using them as well.

    1. I have a friend who uses Vaseline on her hair too! The funny thing is that some of the people who avoid mineral oil products for hair like the plague because it is supposedly bad are perfectly okay using Vaseline and baby oil which is 90-100% mineral oil depending on the brand, on themselves or their babies body. In terms of priority I would be more concerned with what goes on my skin than my hair to be honest.

  2. i use vaseline on my lips and on my body as well. never used it on my hair because i think it would be too sticky.
as for my hair products which contain mineral oil leave me with dry hair. the first months on my journey i use mainly products with mineral oil and non of them did my hair good. so for me, mineral oil does nothing good on my hair

    1. Now that right there is a perfectly good reason not to use products containing mineral oil. Unlike people who just dismiss such products for no valid reason other than the fact they heard/read that it was bad.
