A bit of randomness...

I always have some random thought or two going through my mind, my closest friends are usually the recipients of these with 3am voice notes hahaha. Anyway thought I could share a bit of what goes through my mind sometimes on here you know talk to the world and what not.

As an African girl/woman I lean towards monogamy simply because of the time and environment in which I was born into. Because had I been born during my grandmothers time I would without a shadow of a doubt be in a polygamous union, and my mother’s time I would probably be 70% leaning towards polygamy. For context monogamy for most African societies came with colonialism and Christianity and hence this thought. Where I am from there is provision for people who chose to do so, to legally marry under customary law to include polygamous unions.

I realised that cheating in relationships as a concept was exposed to me as a late teen/young adult, and as a mostly western concept because where I am from the older people around me simply said “he has taken on a new partner/wife or he has multiple women” in fact in my tribe we have a word for this which translates to “a man of many women”. I never heard the word he/she is cheating growing up. Even when the statement was made in English it was “so and so has another partner/partners/multiple partners” never “so and so is cheating on their partner”. If anything the word I heard thrown around a lot was the term “womaniser” which as a child I understood to mean a man who likes many women a little bit too much. I am speaking from my experience as a child who was eavesdropping consciously and subconsciously on grown folks conversations way too much.

And before you start yes the women too “took on a new partner/were women of many men”.  There’s an anecdote among my people that newly married men were traditionally taught to whistle when approaching their homesteads after a long spell away, so that their wife’s lover would get time to run away before the man of the home came through!

A lot of the stuff that Africans especially Anglophone Africans refer to as “morally” right are simply based on Victorian era morality rules and what not. Again thanks to the missionaries and colonialism.

As concerns polygamy I have seen western private school/ivy league school educated men with global careers marry multiple women. All this is to say that sometimes no amount of exposure, modernity or foreign religious ideologies can trump tradition or culture. The one that really reinforced this for me was a British private school educated, Swiss finishing school girl who ended up as someone’s third wife somewhere on the African continent. So if you are planning to marry someone for whom polygamy is traditional please find out their views on this beforehand, so you can make an informed decision if this is something you can tolerate or will be able to accommodate five, ten years down the line. I say this as someone who comes from a polygamous family background on both sides and has polygamous relatives in their 30s and 40s today, so no, it is not a preserve of the old nor is it a preserve of the rich because I have seen both lower income and well to do polygamous unions in this day and age.

Anyway at the end of the day “do you” if monogamy is for you that’s amazing, if polygamy is your thing that’s awesome, if you are team open relationships that’s cool too.

Is it strange that I do not care for proposals, engagement or wedding rings, a “modern city raised western ideology” exposed girl like me? My people traditionally did the whole “when can my people come and see your people” routine to signify an interest in marrying you. My introduction to proposals was movies, no one around me that I knew growing up had a proposal I do not remember hearing these conversations, I do not remember seeing any, I would have known as I hung around my older cousins who got married a lot growing up. So for me it does not bother me if someone doesn’t get down on one knee to ask me to marry them. As for rings apart from being a social construct (there is no legal or religious basis for a ring to validate a marriage ceremony) and marketing gimmick (Google DeBeers diamond engagement ring marketing campaign, you are welcome), this is simply because I am not a “ring girl” I never/hardly wear them as regular jewellery talk less of wedding or engagement it would be just a waste of money get me engagement earrings or something if you must. Those I will wear even to bed because that is how much of an earring girl I am, I absolutely love earrings and bracelets, rings and neckpieces not so much. I only wear a neckpiece if it completes the outfit because I usually feel like something is trying to choke me or crawling on my neck with neck pieces. Again African girl talking here rings are not part of my engagement or wedding tradition so I am good on that front.

I am also not a flower girlie I mean they are cute and nice to look at but if you must get me horticulture get me a plant, you know something along the lines of a cactus or an aloe vera plant you know something low maintenance because as much as I am a nurturer I am not exactly green thumbed like that like that😁

Enough randomness for the day hope you all are doing well.

Happy New Year!!!

To all and everyone still on these blogger streets. I miss what this community used to be I really do but I am also glad to see blogging being revived again. I have come across some new blogs and seen some old friends updating their blogs again which makes me VERY happy. Here’s to more blogging this year!!!

Random thoughts: as much as the block button on social media phones etc is god sent, I also think that blocking people who have done absolutely nothing to deserve it or did you no harm because of whatever difficult situation you are going through personally, is quite childish and immature especially when these people may be part of your story...

Imagine a scenario where one misses a lifetime opportunity because they blocked the person who would have recommended them for this opportunity. True story I currently know someone going through stuff that has been blocking people left right and centre, because they don’t want to deal with the concern and questions that are being thrown at them due to their current situation.  These concerns and questions come from a good place and are there to help alleviate the situation, but the person concerned out of shame (this particular story is a case of not heeding advice from those who’ve been there before and things turning out horribly) would rather block people than communicate the need for time or space to figure things out on their own first. If people don’t give them the space they asked for then absolutely they have every right to block them, but simply blocking people for showing you concern because you are ashamed or embarrassed of your situation is very immature.

I personally just delete numbers especially for people I am no longer cool with like that or no longer vibe with like that who have done me no wrong, (keyword: done me no wrong/harm) but I would rather not have their contact anymore. I would much rather delete their contact and leave open channels of communication should the need arise rather than block people...

Anyway what do I know...

May you have the spirit of discernment to know when to block and when to simply delete a contact in 2024.

Happy New Year!!!

Life Lately...

I have been making my own jam for a few months now and I tell you once you start making your own jam or buying homemade jam you may never want to go back to mass factory produced commercial jams...I can assure you of that. So far I have made Pineapple jam, Mango jam, Apple jam...

Blueberry Jam

Red plum jam

And I mastered my absolute favourite marmalade which makes me sooo happy. You see I am not really a jam person like that but you see marmalade...you can kidnap me using marmalade as bait! I absolutely love love love marmalade and it gives me soooo much joy to finally be able to make my own.

Marmalade

Oh and I even made another favourite mango chutney! Looking forward to making pineapple chutney next.

Mango chutney

Don’t know what to call this era but I have been in the kitchen a whole lot rediscovering my love for baking, which I haven’t done in maybe three years and in a span of three weeks I have made chocolate cake, carrot cake, these two are my favourite, and banana bread. As a bonus I even made samosas (we call them sambusa) from scratch as in I made the pockets/sheets myself, something I haven’t done in a couple of years I usually just buy readymade sambusas. Whatever this era is I am loving it because I am rediscovering parts of myself that had been lost or hidden away maybe due to trauma and doing things that make me happy and I love that for me.

Not my best work but hey it had been a few years since I made these from scratch!

MID MAY MONDAY MUSINGS!

Happy mid May! It’s crazy how the days are flying by these days it’s like no sooner has the month started than it’s ending already! Crazy! Anyway just thought I should share some random thoughts going through my head this Monday...

It’s funny how something I grew up eating while sitting underneath my grandmother’s mango tree is now a “thing”...enters Avocado Toast! I come from an avocado growing and exporting country, they are literally found growing any and everywhere in the avocado growing regions, everyone’s compound will most certainly have an avocado tree or three in these regions, it’s so commonplace it accompanies our bread, our meals, our fruit salads, you just name it and we can eat it with an avocado in it or on the side. My avocado privilege means I find it funny even ridiculous at times how this regular fruit is now a “thing”. Wait until I tell you of the many afternoons we spent splitting open macadamia nut shells with little stones to get to the nuts inside during macadamia nut season...or maybe I will wait until macadamia nuts become a “thing”.

Something else that makes me laugh is how English speaking corporations borrow words from other languages and turns them into something else. Let’s take the Italian word for milk “latte” for example if there ever was a word that is overused in coffee chains this has got to be it. Don’t get me started on “chai” which is Persian/Indian in origin but also claimed by Kiswahili (by way of Persia/India thanks to trade, migration and colonialization) which is now almost something considered a “fancy” drink. Everyone and their grandmother wants to be seen drinking or heard ordering a chai tea latte. Chai literally means tea so saying “Chai Tea” is somehow redundant don’t you think? Some people will visit some other part of the world (East Africa, India, Persia etc) where drinking good old regular chai is commonplace and it’s actually called chai and start saying but this isn’t chai tea because it hasn’t been made in the same way as “gentrified” by your favourite coffee chain. And then there are those that open a Bistro and charge prices on the menu that are in competition with five star restaurants. The word Bistro literally means a small inexpensive restaurant. I could go on and on but that’s it for today’s musings my brain is exhausted.

Oh I almost forgot I got caught in a downpour the other day and got drenched from top to bottom, yep serves me right for leaving my umbrella at home despite the rain forecast. As I was drying up later when I got home I noticed my hair was extra soft turns out that whole thing about rain water being good for your hair is actually true. I could immediately feel the difference in the softness of my hair after being soaked in rain water. I am so tempted to collect some next time it rains and use it on wash day!

Random Thoughts…

I love watching YouTube vlogs and follow quite a number of vloggers however I am at the same time glad that I do not have any vloggers as family or close friends. The thought of a camera in my face anytime I would be around them just does not appeal to me. I mean I love the content these vloggers create but I just don’t think I would be able to handle being around a vlogger when they are vlogging. And you have to have some level of confidence especially to vlog in public going by the looks I see people give vloggers when in public. Speaking of public I wonder if there are rules that govern showing random strangers on a vlog? I mean I personally would not be too happy to see my image on someone’s vlog while in a public place especially if my permission was not sought first. How about blurring the faces of people who may randomly appear in your vlogs Youtubers…

I have been travelling every weekend for the last three weeks and was just glad to be finally home for one weekend in September which just happened to be my birthday weekend. I didn’t get to doing much but I was just glad to not be on the road last weekend.

The world is full of a lot of ungrateful and selfish people but thankfully it is also filled with a lot of kind and grateful people we need to keep the kindness numbers up. I try to perform random acts of kindness whenever I can, the way this world is turning out we need all the kindness we can get.

I have this sixth sense about people I have always had it and it is usually about weeding out people who are not who they claim to be from genuine people. I can never put my hand on it but sometimes I get the feeling when I first meet someone other times it develops over time after I have spent a bit of time with that person. It is usually a nagging feeling at the back of my mind about the person and I have been proven right a lot of times no matter how long it takes for the person’s true colours to come out.

I feel a change of circumstances coming up soon I do not quite know what kind of change exactly it is but I have a feeling that it is going to be a good and welcome change in my life.

I have been feeling quite uninspired with my hair lately. Maybe I need to do something drastic like cut it or colour it or something. Err maybe not…probably going through one of my “not feeling my hair” phases.

Does anyone have a remedy to stop procrastination? I think I may need it….

YouTubers I am Currently Loving!

I am on YouTube a lot, a whole lot and I keep discovering interesting channels every other day.  Here are just some of the “newly found” YouTubers I am currently obsessed with;

Channel name: Primrose Panglea - Prim and her husband Jas are an interracial Zimbabwean (Prim) and Indian (Jas) couple from London. They share the story of how they met, challenges of being in an interracial relationship especially having some family members being against the relationship and fun family vlogs with their two gorgeous kids. Jas likes to show off his cooking skills and does Indian meal tutorials for their viewers.

Channel name: SimplyCin – I discovered Cindy while watching some Jamaica holiday vlogs and YouTube recommended her channel. She mostly does hair and makeup stuff and travel vlogs when she goes back home to Jamaica. I absolutely love her Jamaica vlogs

Channel name: SimiAllSmiles – I just love Simi she has such a fun spirit and her family and friends who are always included in her vlogs make her them so much more fun and interesting to watch.

Channel name: Ify Yvonne – Ify is not “new” to me I have been watching her for a while now but felt that this list would not be complete without her. True epitome of beauty and brains Ify is a Nigerian-American Pharmacist and hair and beauty vlogger. What makes her channel worth watching are her personal vlogs; very well shot, edited and oh so interesting. I get excited every time I see a vlog notification from her. She shares her family celebrations, travel, and time out with friends; she also throws in advice on various subjects ranging from dating to advice on Pharmacy school with her viewers. Oh and she is Janet Jackson’s doppel ganger:)
