Natural Hair Edition – Ivory Coast

I came across this lovely article below on CNN talking about Ivorian women embracing their natural hair.
Ode to hair: Ivorian women champion afros - By Nosmot Gbadamosi and Earl Nurse, CNN
“Growing up with afro hair can be a harrowing experience, especially if forced to chemically straighten it. "Once you are eight, all hairdressers say, oh you have to relax your hair... we can't manage your hair, you have to relax it, it will be beautiful," says Mariam Diaby, a hairdresser and founder of Nappys de Babi, an online community focused on promoting natural hair. Read more HERE…”

What I found interesting in this article is that it took living in Paris for the subject matter an African woman from Ivory Coast to embrace her natural hair. Interesting because most African women for the longest time had been subjected to unrealistic standards of “neat hair” like having long silky straight hair for it to be considered neat and it took this black African lady living in a European capital where long silky straight hair was the norm to embrace her natural hair. In hindsight the whole long silky straight hair is a product of the 80s and 90s if you ask me because I remember looking at photos of the older women in my family and circle and they all had natural hair back in the 70s, 60s and beyond. Nine out ten photos featured women with large Afros and hair braided in beautiful patterns or threaded (African threading) and woven. The few who did not have Afros or braided hair wore wigs. It is only in photos from the 80s and 90s that the relaxer revolution was seen in full effect.

Happy New Year folks I can’t believe we are already 9 days into the New Year can time just slow down a little bit please! Here is your new year’s dose of hair news making rounds on the internet. Enjoy!

First up from wbls.com;
What would you do if your child came home with a hair style different from the one you sent them to school with?
Well a teacher recently took her student's hair into her own hands, and posted a picture of the child before and after she styled her hair in the classroom. In the caption she explained that the little girl's hair looked like "it hadn’t been touched the entire holiday break". The photo is getting a mixed response.

Next from Aljazeera;

And finally from Dallasnews.com;

AUSTIN — Texas laws that regulate businesses that teach African hair braiding are unconstitutional and do not advance public health and safety or any other legitimate government interest, a federal judge ruled.
Isis Brantley, a Dallas woman who runs a hair braiding business inside a Dallas community center, sued the state in 2013, saying laws related to her school were unreasonable and unconstitutional.Click here to read more...

GOAT HAIR OR HUMAN HAIR?

I laughed so hard when I came upon this article on the BBC website especially since I have spoken about “human hair” before in this post. I laughed so much my ribs hurt. Here is an excerpt from the part that really caught my attention…

"We say it is Indian hair or Brazilian hair, but in fact it is normally Chinese hair or even goat hair. They never realise. This is the only way we can keep things cheap," she says, adding that her customers always drive a hard bargain.
Before we can finish our conversation Marie from Uganda comes in, demanding: "I want Brazilian hair, only Brazilian, give me your best quality and best price."
The negotiation goes on for hours under the watchful eyes of the wig-wearing, angry-looking mannequins. As the sun sinks and the moon begins to rise over Guangzhou's polluted skyline, Marie leaves empty-handed.
I run after her as she leaves the shop to ask if she knows that some of the hair isn't human. "Of course I know. The Chinese think we're stupid. I come all the way from Uganda and they think I don't know hair," she says.
Marie pauses and then lets out a huge, hearty laugh before coming close to whisper in my ear: "I laugh a lot when I go home and I know that the beautiful women of Kampala have goats on their heads."

I am still laughing as I type this lol this is some crazy stuff it’s sad that they are duping their clients this way and funny at the same time! Synthetic hair anyone? Hahaha I can’t stop laughing! Go HERE to read the rest of the article…

Extra! Extra!

Read all about it!
The title of this post got me singing along to Immature! I was head over heels in love with boy bands as a teenager they don’t make them like they used to anymore. Anyway every now and then I come across hair related articles in the news that catch my attention so I will be sharing those with you as I find them. Happy reading!

Long, black and lucrative: Chinese county exports human hair to Africa
Long, black and lucrative: sacks bulging with human hair spill onto the streets of a rural county whose farmers have helped make China the world’s biggest exporter of products made from the material. As dawn broke over the morning market in Taihe, vendors bringing hairy wares from across China haggled with dozens of buyers, and tempers frayed. “We have to bargain for hair,” said buyer Liu Yanwen, 35, who sported a buzzcut and arrived at the market at 5.30 am in search of deals. “We have a factory where we’ll turn it into products for export overseas,” he added, clutching a head’s worth of straight, thick black locks. In Africa, hair care becomes a multi-billion dollar industry

(REUTERS) - With all the skill of a master weaver at a loom, Esther Ogble stands under a parasol in the sprawling Wuse market in Nigeria's capital and spins synthetic fibre into women's hair.
Nearby, three customers - one in a hijab - wait for a turn to spend several hours and $40 (£23.7) to have their hair done, a hefty sum in a country where many live on less than $2 a day. Click here to read more………

And just because I can here is Immature with extra extra!!!
